  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Harvey Motulsky -- A fun mystery/thriller set in silicon valley : The first chapter didn’t really grab me, but the second chapter did and I was hooked for the rest of the book. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 11, 2021 )
  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Sean May -- A brisk start leads to a convenient, dull ending : I was intrigued by 1414 after reading the sample. This seemed like a taut thriller set one minute into the future, starring a beaten down journalist who had been done wrong by big tech one too many times. ( Reviewed in the United States on December 10, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Leila Bulling Towne -- Fun, tense, and unpredictable thriller : 1414 is one of the best novels I've read in 2021. Up to this point, I had only known Paul Carr as a well-respected journalist. I've been working in tech for over 20 years and read and saw his name in "business" forums/publications, covering the types of companies I work with. That credibility and experience convinced me to buy his book. And, to be honest, the pandemic leads me to carve more stories about people in the current day and age out there--in person and with people! ( Reviewed in the United States on November 9, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from BG -- Page turner : If you were ever wondering what all the dirt was Carr absorbed in all their time covering Silicon Valley but couldn’t be properly attributed, 1414° is (probably) the confluence of all of it. It’s a work of fiction, sure, but one wonders how much of it has been toned down from reality... ( Reviewed in the United States on October 16, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Josh Mohland -- A solid Silicon Valley tale. Totally. Fictional. Of. Course : If you've ever lived, worked, or played in SF in the last 25 years this book will seem a bit too on the nose. ( Reviewed in the United States on October 23, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from nononono -- Mom read it in a day! : Fascinating mix of fiction in a real world situation... ( Reviewed in the United States on December 29, 2021 )
  • 4.0 out of 5 stars from A. Diamond -- A bitingly funny satirical thriller : Paul Bradley Carr’s 1414° is a satirical thriller that reads like Carl Hiaasen’s take on Silicon Valley, “An industry built on the promise of limitless memory, by people who can’t remember what happened last week.” ( Reviewed in the United States on October 26, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from James -- A topical, worrying, yet all-too-believable, story of the new power of tech : Don't be fooled by the wry, humorous and occasionally laugh out loud tone – this is a dark book, full of compromised, conflicted characters and a few who are just plain evil. Against a topical backdrop of the rising and perhaps-unstoppable power of Silicon Valley and its often-myopic vision of the future, even the good people in Carr's world find it difficult to remain true to their values – or even be sure what they are. And above them two metaphorical gods stalk the landscape: one riling the misogynists and racists of society, apparently in support of the Silicon Valley kyriarchy, and the other invisible except for their actions, chasing their own agenda. It seems rare these days to encounter, in journalist Lou McCarthy, a protagonist who has so little control for most of the story, manipulated and deceived by everyone around her, but the growing sense of frustration due to this is brought to a more conventional climax once she has unpicked all the layers of what is really going on. All the main strands of the plot are tied up by the end, but I can't help wondering what will happen to Lou next. It's hard to believe, after having doubts about the power of journalism, and seeing what it takes to create actual change, that she would not be tempted to pursue her own vision of a better future in a different way. Perhaps she will appear again in a future novel – or a TV adaptation would provide the space to explore the changes in her that a single book, already packed with action and betrayals and reversals, does not. I hope we have not seen the last of Lou McCarthy. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 17, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Frances -- Exciting read, great plot - highly recommended : This novel is so good, it’s hard to put down. A fast paced thriller that should definitely be made into a film or Netflix series, this book is such an interesting take on San Francisco’s hedonistic, eccentric tech billionaires, greed, journalism and tech ethics. Unlike some thrillers, the main characters feel truly three dimensional, with real depth and character development. I’m sure the author’s knowledge of this world, having previously been a journalist covering SF’s tech scene for years, will mean many people in the tech industry will be reading this, looking for characters, story lines or fragments they might recognise. A must read - I’d highly recommend this book. ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 11, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Tom Ball -- Brilliant thriller with a back story : A brilliant, hard to guess - but "all the clues were there" thriller which I thoroughly enjoyed reading - and became a rare "couldn't put it down". It also has a fascinating and thought provoking back story which felt very well delivered without distracting from being a great page turner! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on November 22, 2021 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from SlikFi -- Exciting and fast-paced tech thriller : An enjoyable read, thoroughly entertaining, very well constructed. Had to stop myself from staying up till the early hours reading it! ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on January 26, 2022 )
  • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Bruce Johnson -- A fun, fast-moving mystery-thriller : The book is a really fun read. Interesting characters, a fast-moving plot, with a nice twist at the end. And you'll learn something about Silicon Valley culture. There's no question about the author's insider knowledge about that culture. I've been reading his journalistic contributions for more than half a decade. It's fascinating to see that knowledge used to flesh out not just the protagonist, but so many of the other characters found in the book. The result is a book that works, not just on a mystery level, but also on its social commentary about the bro culture found in today's technology startups. Highly recommended.
